Drain unfixed for two years

FONTAINEBLEAU – Drain is left unconnected since January 2013.

A storm water drain on Elise Road, Fontainebleau, has not been fixed since it was first reported in January 2013.

Resident Ros Grimshaw first complained to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) when a water pipe burst on the street.

The water did not drain away.

Instead it flowed into her property.

Thinking that the drain was blocked, she reported the incident to the agency.

The agency investigated and found that the drain was not connected to the rest of the drainage system in the street.

Since then, no effort has been made to connect the drain to the rest of the drainage system.

Two years later Grimshaw complained again that when there are heavy rains the water floods into her property.

The agency’s spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers responded, “We found that this pipe was not linked, and did not extend to an outlet. Procurement is underway to appoint a contractor to link this system to an existing storm water system thereby mitigating storm water issues.”

She would not say when this would occur, and when asked why the system was not linked to another one, she responded, “Not sure, these seem to be very old drains.”

Ward 102 councillor David Potter  expressed his dissatisfaction at the delay in service delivery.

“It’s been reported and escalated, and promises were made to resolve this for two years,” he said.

“It’s time the City takes this issue seriously, especially with regard to flooding.”

He added that this was an example of the delay the City takes to attend to issues.
