‘Hot spots for cable theft needs adequate security’

KYA SANDS - Ward councillors are angry and frustrated by a series of power outages and unfulfilled promises made by City Power, to fix them.

Some areas in Kya Sands experienced a power outage on 17 January, following the previous six others, that they have had since the beginning the year.

Businesses and Ward councillors have expressed their anger and frustrations about the power outages.

Residents in the area are dealing with Eskom’s load shedding and also an additional problem of cable theft and cable faults.

According to Ward 96 Councillor Matome Mafokwane, ā€œThings that were supposed to be fixed long ago (from early last year) have not been fixed. Security was promised on the hotspots (where the cables are usually stolen) and despite various meetings that were held with the people in charge, nothing has happened.”

He said it is just not fair to business owners in the area.

ā€œIt is sad that as councillors we may come across as unreliable, when the people in charge let you down,ā€ added Mafokwane.

Ralf Bittkau, councillor of Ward 101, tried to contact City Power after he also, received complaints from the community.

He commented “the security problem and electricity issues need to be addressed by the people in charge (City Power).”

City Power spokesperson, Sol Masolo was contacted, however his response is still awaited.
