According to the Randburg SAPS, these safety tips can help you from becoming the next victim of a crime.

Burglary safety tips

· Do not leave your house unlocked

· Close all windows and doors

· If you go away on vacation, have someone you trust to check on it regularly

· Form a neighbourhood watch with yourself and other community members

Protect yourself against fraud

· Do not ask strangers for help at the bank

· Keep your pin number confidential

· Report if your card or ID has been stolen

· Be careful with using your banking details over the internet

· Do not go into business with people without knowing their full information

Robbery safety tips

· Always observe your surroundings when driving and, if something looks suspicious, call the police immediately

· Avoid wearing expensive jewellery when going out in a public place / shopping

· Keep your handbag with you

· Do not carry large sums of money

· Carry your wallet in an inside pocket and not in the rear pocket of your trousers

· Do not give hitchhikers lifts

· Always lock all doors while driving

Keep your business safe

· Do not keep a lot of money in the safe

· Do not tell anyone the secret code of the safe

Theft of motor vehicles

· Make sure your vehicle is secured when you park

· When using a remote control to lock your car, also check by hand if it is actually locked

Theft out of motor vehicles

· Always keep your belongings out of sight

· Always check by hand if your car is locked after you have pressed your remote control
