Burst pipe receives running attention

RANDPARK RIDGE – Johannesburg Water begins work the day after pipe bursts.

Residents are glad that Johannesburg Water started working on a burst water pipe the day after they reported it.

The pipe underneath Tintinkie Road, Randpark Ridge, was a problem between March and June last year, when it first burst.

Over three months, the water tore up a section of the road, and ran steadily into a few properties before Johannesburg Water eventually replaced that section of the pipe.

Now, another portion of the pipe burst on the weekend of 3 January.

Returning from a holiday, Ailsa and Colin Healy were despondent to see water flowing into their property again, especially as the damage to their plants and driveway was severe last year. They reported the problem to Johannesburg Water on 8 January, and were delighted to see workers digging around the pipe the next morning. Questions were sent to Johannesburg Water spokesperson Millicent Kabwe, and comment is awaited.

However, the entity’s workers, who were digging, said that a connection in the pipe was leaking water because the pipe was old, and they will replace the leaking section. “The pipe is rotten,” said Colin Healy, who is by trade a project manager for CIH Project Services. “That is the problem. They need to replace the piping from steel to plastic.”
