JMPD officers turn a blind eye toward ‘porters’

RANDBURG – Don’t give your personal documents out! It could be used against you.

It seems that some of the JMPD officers knew about‘porters’ who ask people for money outside the Randburg Civic Centre, but did nothing to apprehend them.{See previous story}

When the Randburg Sun journalist visited the centre on 8 January, she saw the JMPD officers and asked them why they did not confront these porters?

Their response was,“We are not here for that right now, we are here for something else.”

The question is, should the fight against corruption be the responsibility of any abiding citizen or, especially, the law enforcement personnel?

Chief Superintendent and JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar was contacted as to why the officers were not doing anything.

“The instruction was to keep the ‘touts’ (porters) out of the car park. I will inform the commander that the officers did not understand the matter clearly,” said Minnaar.

“I have reported this matter to the JMPD and I am really disappointment at the response,” said Ward 102 councillor David Potter.

Minnaar urged the public not to use the services that are offered by these ‘porters’.

“They give these touts their personal documents like their IDs and trust them with it, when it can be used for criminal activity,” he concluded.
