Diepsloot kidnap suspects appear in court

RANDBURG – Diepsloot kidnapping suspected case postponed to 16 January.

Four suspects accused of kidnapping a mother and eight- month-old baby appeared at the Randburg Magistrates Court on 8 January.

The suspects aged between 28 and 34 allegedly kidnapped the woman and her baby girl on 1 January on their way back from Zimbabwe.

Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela, spokesperson for the Cluster Commander SAPS Honeydew Cluster reports ,”It is suggested the woman and her baby were travelling with the suspects from Zimbabwe. The agreed fare was reportedly R300. It is alleged that before she could reach her intended destination, Brits, where she was going to visit her husband, the fare was inflated to R1 500. She was taken to Diepsloot because she could not afford that amount.”

According to the police, the suspects contacted the husband and demanded R1 500. They threatened that he would not see his family again if he did not pay.

The husband then contacted the Diepsloot Police, where a tracing unit was deployed on 6 January.

The mother and child were subsequently rescued in Diepsloot Extension 6.

The case has been postponed to 15 January and the suspects will remain in police custody.
