ROSEBANK – Northcliff-based market research organisation highlights the best businesses in Johannesburg.

PMR.africa (Professional Market Research Africa) honoured the best businesses and institutions in Johannesburg on 1 December.

The Northcliff-based organisation held its Business Excellence Awards Breakfast at Hyatt Regency Johannesburg, in Rosebank, where it revealed the results of an extensive research project.

Between May and July, the organisation enquired of 140 CEOs, managing directors, business owners, company directors and managers and senior government officials in the City of Johannesburg to find out which were the best companies and institutions in the City over the preceding 12 months.

Some of the winners were:

  • Colleges/training insitutions: Damelin
  • Development agencies: Gauteng Growth Development Agency
  • Golf courses: Randpark Golf Club
  • Local newspapers: Randburg Sun
  • Pharmaceutical retailers: Dis-Chem
  • Security companies: Fidelity Security Group
  • Spas: The Fairway Spa
  • Travel agents: HRG Rennies Travel
  • Companies/institutions doing most to fight crime: Crime Line
  • Shopping centres: Sandton City
  • Top tourist attractions: Johannesburg Zoo
  • Disease management for HIV/AIDS: Aid for Aids
  • Disease management for diabetes: Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology

The rating criteria included the economic growth and development of the City of Johannesburg, managerial expertise, corporate governance, brand awareness, marketing efforts, and innovation.

“Today is about acknowledging the teams behind successful companies,” said PMR.africa CEO Johan Hattingh.

He added that the awards demonstrate that companies in South Africa are efficient, and can compete with others around the world.

Director of Henley Business School Africa Prof Jon Foster-Pedley delivered a brief lecture, arguing that Africa is on the brink of taking over the world economically. Thanks to efficient businesses, 52 African countries are growing faster than the United States of America (USA). He added that Africa is very strong in mining, accountancy, fashion and creative industries and telecommunications. “There is nobody else [apart from Africa],” Foster Pedley concluded. “It is our time.”
