Local Drug Action Committee launched at Windsor

ROBIN HILLS - Community members asked to join hands in the war against drugs in Windsor at the launch of the Local Drug Action Committee.

The Local Drug Awareness Committee (LDAC) launch saw community members, organisations and key departments in Johannesburg come together on 15 November.

This committee was formed after some community leaders noticed that Windsor has been plagued with a scourge of drugs.

LDAC hopes to eradicate the elements which are causing the problem and educate those living with drug addiction problems, that there is help out there.

Ward 98 Councillor Laurette van Zijl welcomed all the attendees.

“The rain is tears for the drugs that are being used in our community, but also a blessing because the sun is also coming out to shine the light,” said Van Zijl. She expressed how happy she is that all the role players are going to join hands in the fight against drugs.

Windsor has been the face of drugs for months, said Sharon Peters, the LDAC committee chairperson. She urged the community to get involved and suggest things to help eradicate the problem they are facing.

Law enforcement officials attended in the pledge to help enforce a drug-free community.

Anna Selaolo Mohojana of City of Johannesburg’s Social Development Department explained that the National Plan recognises that taking a drug user to jail will not solve the problem 100 per cent, but that if taken to a rehabilitation centre, could help further.

“Drug education is the key and that prevention is definitely better than cure, ” expressed Mohojana

Peters ended by thanking everyone for attending and making it a successful meeting and said that she hoped the community will become more involved moving forward.
