Business owners hand-over donations at Kya Sands

KYA SANDS - One in One Out work together with Scrooge Diner, Babylon and Mimmos from Bright Water Commons to donate essentials to the disaster relief at Kya Sands.

Donations were handed over on 25 October at the Pipe Line Informal Settlement in Kya Sands.

Business owners and charity organisations such as 1in1out , Mimmos, Scrooge Diner and Babylon based at the Bright Water Commons, delivered the donations.

What started as a simple Facebook status by Justin Jeffries of Justin Jeffries Biokinetics Practice asking for donations for the victims of the fire, grew into a massive campaign.

1in1out charity and community developers teamed up with Mimmos, Scrooge Diner and Babylon from the Bright Water Commons.

Together they managed to raise R2 020 which went to the purchase of 33 stoves.

Pastors Evans and Grace Phiri of Judah Afrika Church selected 25 families from the settlement; of those were the elderly and most destitute.

Each family received one stove and a bag of clothing and other donated items.

Representatives of 1in1out Stephen Thomas, Scrooge Diner’s manager Terrance Tracey and Babylon manager Eben van der Westhuizen sat in a meeting with the community leaders and Pastor Grace Phiri.

They discussed what would happen with the money that has been raised by the campaign.

After lengthy discussions, ideas such as building a library or a primary school came forth.

The allocation of the materials and money will be finalised at a later stage when all the relevant community members and leaders decide on a concrete plan.

To date they have collected R1 000 in shopping vouchers, R2 020 cash donations that were used to purchase the stoves and another R10 000 from a benefactor.

For financial or item donations the public can call 1in1out , as well as Judah Africa Church.
