Kya Sand disaster initiative

KYA SAND- Building materials are needed for people of Pipeline Informal Settlement, in order the to rebuild their houses.

The fire that engulfed the Pipeline Informal Settlement left 26 000 families destitute.Different charity organisations and councillors have sounded calls to the public to help with donations.

According to Stephen Thomas of 1in1out charity organisation, “People are in dire need for building materials. People have been very generous by donating food and clothes, but what is most needed are small furniture units and kitchen utensils (non-electrical goods).”

A Kya Sand disaster relief initiative has been started by different businesses in Randburg and surroundings such as Scrooge Diner, Babylon, Mimos and Brightwater Commons. “They are asking their customers to donate R10 toward this initiative. All the money will be used to buy small furniture and kitchen utensils. Anyone who wants to join us, we will be leaving the main entrance of Brightwater Commons on 25 October at 10am,” added Thomas.

Terrence Tracey of Scrooge Diner concurs with Thomas, saying that three restaurants, including Pick n Pay in Brightwater Commons are inviting their customers to help with donations from as little R10.

“There is an old car parked outside Mimos restaurant, where we ask the public to put in their items like furniture, mattresses, blankets and anything that is re-usable and non-electrical goods for the people of Kya Sand,” explained Tracey.

Thomas added that they need more baby food, small gas or paraffin stoves, tables chairs, kitchen utensils and primus stoves.

Brightwater Commons management said they support the initiative of the three tenants who are helping people of Kya Sand.

Pastor Evans Phiri said, “people can drop their donations at our church – Judas Africa in Lot 51 on the corner of Agnus and Rooikramer roads. Local people such as NGOs, paramedics and community leaders have been generous with food and clothes. But we need building materials like nails, doors and cement.”
