Illegal traders who are conducting their ‘businesses’ on Olievenhout Road, behind Northgate Shopping Centre, argue that what they sell help them sustain themselves.

Randburg Sun has received numerous complaints from residents who are concerned over the illegal trading and their make-shift shelters from where they operate.

Some traders were aggressive and others were more approachable.

One trader* said they do not need permission to use the land of their ancestors.

“You want us get permission to use our African land?”

Another illegal trader* stated,” We have been looking for jobs but cannot get any. This is the only way we can sustain ourselves. We do not cause any problems and would like to speak to the community leaders.”

*Both refused to give their names to the newspaper.

“There seems to be a rapid growth of these illegal businesses in this parkland area. If not checked soon it will lead to a rapid squatter development and urban blight of that whole area,” reckons Steve Egan, a resident in Northwold.

Corrie du Pont of Northwold Gardens says she has reported this matter twice to the City Parks officials but nothing has been done. “A woman was attacked recently on the same road. Who knows what else is going on with those illegal squaters. We do not feel safe at all.”

Egan and Du Pont say they have also complained to Ward 101 Councillor Ralf Bittkau about this issue of illegal squattters and traders.

“This issue has been raised with JPC and JMPD for urgent action. The shacks that you see from the road at the old nursery are only the tip of the iceberg. We have a huge issue with illegal and mainly foreign people having invaded this property. I have asked for an urgent intervention by the property company and JMPD.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minaar of JMPD said, “People are free to trade and sell in Johanesburg’s streets but they cannot operate outside government institutions, or next to an ATM, or next to a church or park.”

Minaar advised that the Bylaws Department be contacted to go and access the situation.

Questions were sent to Sam Sephaga of JMPD Bylaws Department but no response was forthcoming by the time of going to print.
