Honeydew bowl over Randburg in President’s clash

Honeydew Bowling Club triumphed over Randburg Bowls Club by eight points in their annual President’s Invitational Tournament on 27 September. The teams do not play in the same league, which is why the tournament is a rare opportunity for either side to assert dominance over the other. Last year, Randburg won on their home green.

This year Honeydew won at home. The women’s category was won by Honeydew 57–42. The men’s category was tied 54–54. The mixed category was won by Randburg 18–11. Overall, the scores finished with Honeydew 122, Randburg 114. “It was a close competition, very competitive,” said Honeydew Bowling Club President David Chantry. “When there was just an eight-point differential, you know it was close. Of course we are delighted with the win.”

Despite losing, Randburg Bowls Club President Laurie Stafford said that the day was fantastic. “It was competitive and played in a great spirit,” he said. “And it is guaranteed that Randburg will win next year.”

After the game, the teams socialised with drinks in the bar, and retold stories of their contest.
