Childhood revived and revved up
FONTAINEBLEAU – The Great Model Train Expo will bring out your inner child.
Men are set to become boys again when the Great Model Train Expo makes a turn in Randburg on 11 and 12 October.
Rinke Blok, owner of the Model Train Shop at Honey Crest Shopping Centre in Randpark Ridge, is very excited about the expo, which will be hosted to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the hobby club he belongs to, the N Gauge Guild of South Africa.
“We started the model railway club 20 years ago to show the public at large what model railroading is all about,” said Blok.
“Our aim has always been promote the hobby and it has grown exponentially over the years. We regularly exhibit our work at many hobby expos, we even won first place in the N Gauge International convention in Stuttgart in Germany in 2011.”
Blok explained that this expo will be to raise funds for Reefsteamers (a non-profit, Section 21 company), who are a group of steam train enthusiasts who run both the Magaliesburg Express and the Irene Special steam trains and need an external funds in order to keep steam train history alive.
“There will be many exhibits and fun things to do at the expo,” Blok continued with a smile. “Model railway layouts, a live steam railway, models for sale and even a jumping castle.”
The Great Model Train Expo will be held at Hoërskool Randburg on 11 and 12 October from 10am to 5pm. “All current and aspiring hobbyists are welcome,” concludes Blok. “You’re never too old…”
