Baken Akademie opens its doors

Northwold welcomes its new Afrikaans school called Baken Akademie.

The greater community welcomes the new private Afrikaans school Baken Akademie.

Baken opened its doors on 1 September for applicants of 2015.

Husband and wife, Jurie and Andri Groenewald, saw a great need for an Afrikaans school in the area. Principal Martin Gericke has had decades of experience in the academic environment.

He was the first principal at Leeuwenhof School in Germiston.

The team communicated with the Reformed Church of Randburg in Northwold about opening up a school on the larger premises.

Baken will accommodate pupils from Grade 00 up until Grade 9. At a further stage, there will be classes up to Matric.

Gericke explained the immense need for an Afrikaans ‘mother tongue’ school for communities around the N1 up until Centurion.

He suggests the school will focus on mainstream academics in a specialised (IEB and CAPS) programme, emphasising science, technology, engineering and maths.

The programme calls students from all sorts of backgrounds and area.

Jurie Groenewald, one of the founders commented, “We will work a lot with the community like Anne Harding homes, and because ‘Baken’ means ‘beacon’ in English, we strongly uphold the school’s ethos as,’Wees Die Lig’ (Be the light).”

Open days : 27 September 10am until 1pm, 25 October and 15 November.
