Recycle your baby car seat

FERNDALE – Wheel Well receives used car seats, restores them, and gives them away for donations.

In light of Recycling Day SA on 19 September, residents are urged to recycle their used baby car seats.

Wheel Well, a non-profit organisation based at the Brightwater Commons, Ferndale, can help with this.

Peggie Mars, founder of this organisation, explains that they receive used baby car seats, and take them apart before washing, cleaning, repairing and “making them pretty again”.

These are then given away for donations.

She said that baby car seats are expensive and last longer than the development of one child.

Furthermore, many of the plastics in the seats are not biodegradable.

“The seats can be reused if they are looked after well,” she says.

If Wheel Well receives a baby car seat that is in such a poor condition that it cannot be restored, it sends the seat to a recycling company to recycle what components of the seat it can.

Mars concludes that the seat belt, headrest and airbag safety features are designed for adults and cannot protect a child in an accident as much as a car seat can. Therefore save the planet, and save the children.
