What to do at Golden Harvest Park

GOLDEN HARVEST PARK – Green space offers abundant joys for residents.

Fancy spending time in the splendour of natural beauty? Golden Harvest Park would have to be one of the best places to do so. Friends of Golden Harvest Park committee members Pippa Wepener and Leon Bradley explain that the park was established in 1972 by the then Randburg Municipality as a ‘green lung’ for residents.

They claim that the park is the largest green space in Randburg, and offers forms of recreation such as walking/jogging, fishing, mountain biking, various sports including beach soccer, and bird watching. A playground is in good condition, and benches and braai facilities are available. The park apparently boasts about 60 species of birds, and its dam is home to geese, carp, barbel, crabs, frogs and otters. “I’ve also seen mongoose[s] in the park,” claims Bradley.

A 100-year-old windmill stands as a monument of sorts, no longer working but renovated by Stewarts and Lloyds Steel Suppliers two years ago to maintain a sense of pride in the structure. The Friends of Golden Harvest Park is a group of people, who work with authorities and residents to make the park safe and a place of interest in the community. It is currently being registered as a non-profit company.

Drugs and muggings are prevalent in the park (see previous articles), a point raised at Honeydew Sector 1 Community Policing Forum’s last meeting on 8 September. The Friends of Golden Harvest Park meet with Honeydew Police once per month to help reduce crime in the park.
