Serious and violent crimes have decreased in Honeydew Sector 1 since last month (see previous article), while street robberies and petty crime have risen.
This was said at a Honeydew Sector 1 Community Policing Forum meeting at The Barn Christian Fellowship, Boskruin, on 8 September, where the sector’s police, Community Policing Forum, security companies, Ward councillor, resident associations and general public discussed crime in the sector, and the ways it can be challenged.
CPF chairperson Greg Pearce said that street robberies in the sector over the last month mainly involved domestic workers and school children. He added that a number of arrests had been made of members of gangs that had been around for a long time. Honeydew Sector 1 Manager Warrant Officer Gabriel Nonyane said that theft out of motor vehicles had risen. To which Pearce pleaded with residents to not leave valuables in plain sight in vehicles.
Nonyane said that four drug-related arrests were made on Olievenhout Avenue, Northgate, and two more had been made in Northwold. Three people were also arrested for possession of stolen property, at a plot next to Golden Harvest Park. Honeydew Police had also arrested 188 illegal immigrants in its entire area in the last month, and deported them.
Ward 101 councillor Ralf Bittkau highlighted an ongoing problem with drugs around Banbury Cross Village, in Northwold, and in Golden Harvest Park. Friends of Golden Harvest Park committee member Gerrie Odendaal said that two men were thought to be mugging people in the park with a knife and pepper spray, targeting children and older people.
Areas in Honeydew Sector 1 include Boskruin, Bromhof, Bush Hill Estate Agricultural Holdings (AH), Glen Dayson AH, Hunter’s Hill AH, Kelly Ridge, Northhgate, North Riding AH, Northwold, Randpark Ridge, Sonneglans, Strijdom Park and Sundowner.
