City Power to better secure its substations

BLAIRGOWRIE – City Power reveals plans to prevent burglaries.

City Power spokesperson Sydney Mphahlele has announced that the utility will improve the security of its substations. This, following a query about a substation on the corner of Republic and Loots roads, Blairgowrie, which, Street Captain for Loots Road in the Blairgowrie Community Association Tobie Muller says, is broken into and vandalised frequently.

“We are currently dealing with the issue,” says Mphahlele about the substation. “Specifications and measures which include fencing are being developed to improve on how we lock our substations with an aim of preventing break-ins and vagrants intruding into our substations.” Muller says that the two locks currently used by the utility on the aforementioned substation’s gate are easily broken with bolt cutters or a saw.

This makes the cables inside the substation an easy target, to the detriment of residents who lose their electricity, or become worried for their security when vagrants move into the substation. Mphahlele adds that “Members of the public can help us to prevent break-ins by reporting any suspicious activity around our infrastructure by phoning 080 000 3251 or 011 490 7553.”
