From vacant land to urban park

KENSINGTON B – Residents’ Association plans to transform problem property into urban park for the community.

The Kensington B Resident’s Association (KRA) is currently in the initial phases of drafting a proposal to turn the problematic vacant lot of land next to Randburg Magistrates’ Court into an urban park.

Once drafted, the proposal will be made to the Department of Public Works (DPW), who officially stated in July that they would consider the request from the KRA who has been working to clear the property of vagrants and criminals for the last eight years.

The plan revolves around combining the vacant property that DPW owns, with the adjacent vacant land owned by Randburg Clinic School – more than six hectares of vacant land in the middle of a densely populated part of Randburg.

“We’ve got so many suggestions from the community regarding what can be done with the park,” said KRA chairperson, Arlene Leggat. “From sports fields, cycling or BMX track, a skate park to a driving range.”

Leggat feels strongly that the development of such a park can only be beneficial to the Kensington B community and surrounds.

“Randburg Sports Complex is quite a distance from here [Kensington B], our children can’t simply walk there after school to play soccer or other sports.

“We’re planning on making it self-sustainable and preferably money-generating, but at minimal fees. These funds will then be used to maintain the property and to keep it safe and secure for residents who come and enjoy the park.”

Vagrants and recyclers on the property may have to be relocated, but KRA has planned to employ them so they can continue their recycling in a designated area with the support of Pikitup.

Block Watch, who is the security service provider in the area, have also offered their support to secure the property.

Another part of the plan is to upgrade the neighbouring tennis courts owned by Randburg Police, which have been left to dilapidate due to never being used. They will also be part of the urban park.

“This park will be open to all residents. Not just those from Kensington B, but also Fernadale, Vandia Gardens, Bryanston and anyone who would like to use it.”
