Brazil and Chile struggled hard against each other, with neither side gaining supremacy in a 1–1 draw that had to be decided by penalties, which Brazil won 3–2 in the first round of 16 matches.

David Luiz scored for Brazil, deflecting a corner in, after a possible touch from Chile defender Jara might have helped the Brazilian, in the 18th minute.

Chile’s star player, Alexis Sanchez, equalised for Chile, shooting hard into the bottom left corner in the 32nd minute.

After Brazil’s Hulk was unfairly denied a goal for handball and Chile’s Pinilla hit the crossbar in injury time, penalties were executed.

Brazil keeper Julio Cesar, who won man of the match, and Chile keeper Claudio Bravo both did well.

David Luiz took the first penalty for Brazil and scored, while Pinilla’s shot for Chile was saved.

Brazil’s Willian missed and Chile’s Sanchez’s shot was saved.

Marcelo scored for Brazil and so did Aránguiz for Chile.

Hulk could not score for Brazil while Diaz could for Chile.

This put penalties 2–2 as Neymar stepped forward for Brazil, and Jara for Chile.

Neymar scored his after fine footwork in the run up, before Jara’s shot hit the right post and bounced past the left post, much to the disbelief of Chile fans.

Colombia then pulled off an upset by beating Uruguay 2–0 in the second round of 16 match.

James Rodríguez is making a name for himself, and his two goals put him ahead as the leading goal scorer in the tournament with five.

His first goal was world-class, chesting a pass before volleying in from distance in the 28th minute.

The second goal was a good finish after precise passing by teammates set it up in the 50th minute.

Spokesperson for Randburg Football Club Marlon Abrahams said that in his personal view Brazil is most likely to win the world cup.

“They are playing at home, have experience of winning the world cup [being the only team to have won the world cup five times], know the climate and the government has spent a lot of money on infrastructure,” he said.
