Water pipe burst leaves Randpark Ridge dry

RANDBURG - Burst pipe in Randpark Ridge on Suikerbos Avenue causes water cuts.

Ward 102 residents have been negatively affected by water cuts due to a burst water pipe on the corner of Suikerbos Avenue in Randpark Ridge.

According to Bromhof resident Alwyn Smit, he and his neighbours have not had any water since the morning of 17 June to the time of publishing.

The old water pipe was being replaced to place new pipes which were too big.
The old water pipe was to be replaced with new pipes, which turned out to be too big.

“My wife and I had to go to a friend’s house this morning [19 June] to take a bath, and thus could not go to work. Joburg Connect told me the water would be back by this evening but I highly doubt it,” said Smit.

Randpark Ridge resident Carole Brak said she had been told that the water tank supplied by Joburg Water would be at the nearest garage, but when she and other residents drove to the located tank areas, there was nothing.

Another Randpark resident, Aletta Oliver stated that she knew nothing of the supplied water tanks and had to use water from her pool to flush her toilet and to wash dishes.

According to Ward 102 councillor Ralf Bittkau, the pipe that Joburg Water is currently replacing is 600m long and affects most of Ward 102 and some parts of Ward 104.

“The water was supposed to be back by this evening but there has been a delay due to the pipe being too big,” explained Bittkau.

“Joburg Water had to get a collar machine to resize the new pipe to fit correctly and the problem should be resolved soon.”

A Joburg Water manager on site told residents that they may have not have received any notice of the water cut because this was an emergency call to come fix the pipe.

He said there were water tanks at the nearest shopping centres and garages, but for more details residents should call Joburg Connect.

The water tank at the Engene garage on the corner of Molope Road and Suikerbos Avenue is one of the many tanks supplied by Joburg Water.

  1. I think this is rediculous, if they were planning on doing repairs, at least let the effected suburbs know by putting a note or a board up so we can make alternative arrangements and to give us a timeline as to the delay so we can also prepare ourselves.

  2. After the major pipe burst from 17-19 June that left us without water for two days….last night (30 June) at about 18:40 we were again left without water. Tried contacting CoJ but “high call volumes” seems to be blamed for not answering calls…. Eventually shortly before 12:00am last night someone picked up and said that the same pipe had burst again and that was the reason for us again having no water. No one can give an estimate on when this will be fixed. Have it been fixed properly the first time (and also before the 25 year lifespan – now now 10 years overdue) we would not have had this problem. As a responsible, paying citizen this is cause for concern…what happens to the money that should be used to do routine maintenance work before such a big problem (pipe burst) arises?? I am not a happy City of Joburg customer!
