Tough times on day six of World Cup
JOHANNESBURG – Goalkeepers shock audiences on day six of world cup. Residents share their views.
A hard-fought win, a goal-less draw and two costly goalkeeping errors occurred on day six of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, on 17 and 18 June.
Johannesburg residents provided their views on the matches (see below).
First Belgium beat Algeria 2 – 1 in a Group H-match.
Feghouli scored Algeria’s first world cup goal since 1986 through a penalty in the 25th minute, after he was fouled by Vertonghen in the box.
Belgium proceeded to win through two goals by substitutes, the first by Fellaini heading off a cross in the 70th minute, and the second by Mertens, finishing well after a great pass by Hazard, in the 80th minute.
Brazil then drew with Mexico 0 – 0 in group A.
Mexico’s keeper Memo Ochoa played particularly well to ensure his side kept a clean sheet.
The game was close, Brazil securing 53 percent possession and only one more shot than Mexico (14 versus 13), though Brazil produced five more shots on goal (eight versus Mexico’s three).
Russia and Korea Republic (South Korea) drew 1 – 1 in a Group H-match that will be remembered for the wrong reasons.
In the 68th minute, when Korea Republic’s Lee Keun-ho shot from outside the box, Russia’s keeper Akinfeev performed poorly, letting the ball through his hands for a goal.
Russia secured the draw though, in the 74th minute, when Korea Republic’s keeper Sung-Ryong blocked a shot back into the path of Kerzhakov, who was 4m from goal, and could not miss.
Spokesperson for Randburg Football Club Marlon Abrahams said that in his personal view Brazil is most likely to win the world cup.
“They are playing at home, have experience of winning the world cup [being the only team to have won the world cup five times], know the climate and the government has spent a lot of money on infrastructure,” he said.
