Africa struggles on day five of World Cup – residents comment

JOHANNESBURG – Müller scores hat-trick for Germany against Portugal, while Nigeria and Ghana struggle. Residents share their views.

Germany crushed Portugal while Nigeria and Ghana struggled on day five of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, on 16 and 17 June.

Germany beat Portugal 4 – 0, in group G, through a hat-trick by Thomas Müller.

The German striker opened scoring through a penalty in the 12th minute after Pereira fouled Gotze in the box.

Hummels scored the second for Germany through a header from a corner in the 32nd minute.

Portugal’s Pepe was shown a straight red card for a headbutt on Müller, who shortly afterwards compounded Portugal’s problems by scoring after a defensive error in the 45th minute.

Müller scored his third, and Germany’s fourth, with an easy finish from a cross in the 78th minute.

Iran and Nigeria drew 0 – 0 in a group F encounter.

This despite Nigeria winning 63 percent possession and making 10 shots, and six on goal, compared to Iran’s seven and three respectively.

Ghana then lost to the United States of America (USA) in group G, in a mirror 2 – 1 result of their victory against the USA in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in the round of 16.

USA’s Dempsey scored after just 29 seconds, the fifth fastest world cup goal, shooting hard from 8m.

Ayew equalised for Ghana in the 82nd minute, shooting past USA keeper Howard with the outside of his foot.

But Brooks won the match for USA in the 86th minute, with a header from a corner.
