Stars shine on day four of World Cup – residents comment

JOBURG – Benzema and Messi win for France and Argentina on day four of WC. Residents share their views.

Two football stars won matches for their countries on day four of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, on 15 and 16 June.

Before the stars could shine, Switzerland beat Ecuador 2 – 1 in group E.

Valencia first headed a goal for Ecuador from a free kick in the 22nd minute.

Mehmedi then headed the equaliser for Switzerland from a corner in the 48th minute.

Seferovic won the three points for Switzerland when he fired in a goal after a cross in additional time.

Then Karim Benzema scored two goals and made the third, as France beat Honduras 3 – 0 in group E.

First Benzema scored a penalty in the 45th minute, after Palacios received a second yellow card for a foul on Pogba in the box.

Following a Benzema shot into the post in the 48th minute, Honduras keeper Valladares accidentally knocked the ball back for an own goal.

Benzema scored again in the 72nd minute, shooting from a tight angle.

Aregntina’s performance was all Messi when they beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2 – 1 in group F.

The latter team made their world cup finals debut, but unfortunately for them also ‘scored’ the fastest own goal in world cup history when Kolasinac deflected Messi’s free kick past keeper Begovic after just two minutes and eight seconds.

Messi, four times world player of the year, then scored for Argentina in the 65th minute, running and passing before slotting in close to the left post.

Bosnia and Herzegovina pulled one back in the 85th minute, with Ibisevic shooting through the legs of Argentina keeper Romero.

He cited Argentina’s geographical closeness to Brazil, them being Brazil’s traditional rivals and the Messi factor as reasons for this.
