Karate kicks in Boskruin

BOSKRUIN - Karate instructor Mike Lester urges more people to take part in karate as an art of life and strength-building sport.

Boskruin Karate Club seeks to promote physical fitness and help young people find their strength.

Karate instructor Mike Lester, said since he took over the club five years ago, his aim has been to ensure that they teach the best in karate and offer the highest level of skills to their members.

“I would love for more people to join the sport in the area as I believe it is a great way to keep fit. Karate as a sport teaches one to be confident, it builds strength, tones muscles and helps one to concentrate. Our instructors do not encourage fighting, but simply teach people to defend themselves well,” said Lester.

The club which is based in Boskruin Community Centre, falls under the Japanese Karate Association and takes part in the inter-club and national level championships within the association.

“It is important that the club attends the championships as this helps the children, and even adults who train with us, to know where their strengths lie. I would like more people to enter the championships and want to see more of the club members also take part.”

Lester stated that karate is more of an art than a sport which is often the reason it is not taken as seriously as soccer or rugby and this is why the club has struggled to get the finances they require. “It would be great to have more of the community’s support for the club. I therefore plead with local business and other residents to join us in support of this great sport.”
