AfriForum launches its #cleanSA initiative

JOBURG - AfriForum launched its #clean SA initiative on 20 May.

There is finally hope for South Africans who are fed-up with seeing waste in their towns.

The civil rights organisation AfriForum, launched its #cleanSA initiative on 20 May.

The new initiative focuses on cleaning and sustainable waste management in South Africa.

Head of Environmental Affairs for AfriForum Julius Kleynhans announced that he wants South Africa to be clean and healthy.

He added that they want to encourage citizens to add value to waste, to recycle waste and to create economic growth in establishing sustainable environment.

Speaking to Randburg Sun, Kleynhans emphasised that according to the estimation from the State of the Environment Report of 2012 by Department of Environmental affairs, 42 million cubic meters of general waste, including 5 million cubic meters of harmful waste are generated annually.

“South Africans need to take up the challenge of keeping their country clean, our focus is to inform communities, schools and businesses about the Clean SA programme,” explained Kleynhans.

“So far the results are good, we started working on the streets of Johannesburg recently, and we hope this promotes awareness, and this initiative will create jobs because rural communities are already getting involved.” added Kleynhans.

AfriForum emphasised that the initiative will focus on projects in which towns will be cleaned, awareness will be created in numerous places and best practice in municipalities will be encouraged.

“We live in the most beautiful country in the world, and it is so sad to drive around and see waste all over. We have to start looking after our country by keeping it clean and knowing the value of waste,” Kleynhans concluded.

Kleynhans explained that they are working on other projects to improve the country.
