Sewage pours into Jukskei
Pipe leak causes rapid flow into the Klein Jukskei.
Sewage has been rapidly pouring into the Klein Jukskei River in Bloubosrand for about three months.
Although Joburg Water did not respond to this issue at the time of going to print, its workers on site told residents that a broken pipe opposite Short Street in Bloubosrand was the cause of the leak.
Resident Athelé Oosterbrook said there was about 200 litres of sewage pouring into the river every 10 minutes.
Resident Alosha Lynov’s property is on the same level as the main sewerage line and on three occasions sewage poured out of his bath and toilet, and through his house.
His garden is also covered in sewage as it constantly seeps up from underground.
“It flowed through my house at 20 litres per second for three days in a row,” he said.
“I don’t know what you would do if you had 35 000 litres of sewage in your child’s bedroom overflowing through the window sills. I am pretty upset.”
Lynov said it was adversely affecting his and his child’s health. He will try claim money from the City of Johannesburg for property and health damages.
Other residents and workers in the area complained about the smell and the perceived lack of efficiency of Joburg Water.
