A fencing tradition

The third generation in a family of fencers is exploring new boundaries.

Trinityhouse Private School Grade 10 pupil Pavel Tychler is carrying on his family’s fencing tradition.

He qualified to represent South Africa at the Cadet Fencing World Championships in April in Bulgaria. From 8 to 27 January Tychler (15) participated in many European countries. He visited Switzerland, Germany, Slovakia, Hungary and France.

Tychler has officially been fencing for the past seven years. He is the third generation in a family of fencers. His father Gennady used to be a fencing coach for the USSR team. Tychler’s grandfather David was also a fencer.

Tychler will participate in the U17 age group at the championships.
