OPINION: The healing power of lavender

Lavender is well-known for its wonderful sweet smell, but not many are aware of its diverse uses.

Lavender can be used to treat many health conditions through inhalation. It is most commonly used by adding 10 drops to your bath, but can also be used by adding some to a humidifier. In this way it will easily be absorbed into your body through your skin and lungs.

If you don’t have a humidifier, fill the top dish of an oil burner or vaporiser with water and add eight drops of lavender oil. Place a lit tea light candle in the space provided underneath the dish and place this in your bedroom or living room – wherever you spend your time. Fill the dish with warm water for quick results.

Lavender may be used to treat the following:

Insomnia

Lavender is great for reducing stress and tension, and is often used in aromatherapy to help relieve insomnia. It promotes relaxation, slows the activity of the nervous system and improves sleep quality.

Low Mood

Lavender is known to be one of the most useful essences for the relief of agitation and anxiety. The esters in the oil will help relieve anxiety, tension and depression.

Migraines

Apply three drops of pure lavender oil to your pillow before getting into bed, or add three drops of oil to your humidifier or vaporiser. The aroma will quickly spread. While this is happening control your breathing, taking deep breaths.

As a defense against airborne viruses

Inhaling lavender benefits the respiratory tract, in particular when you have coughs, colds or influenza. It will ease your breathing when lungs and sinuses are blocked up.

A must in all homes, the benefits of lavender are truly endless.
