Carte Blanche e-toll petition a fake

JOBURG - Make a real difference and join the public protest on 25 January.

An email currently doing the rounds which contains a link to an anti e-tolling petition, supposedly from Carte Blanche, is a farce.

The message is being communicated via email and BBM. It states the following:

GO And VOTE (Please :) )

Hi everyone.

As per Carte Blanche, if a million people don’t register and refuse to pay for e-toll, the entire system will collapse. E-toll cannot prosecute you because they will be restricting your movement which is against your constitutional rights.

PLEASE VOTE NOW

Just click on link and vote – no names required … just Yes or No.

Please get the word around so that we can scrap this system. They are looking for 1 million votes, and only 30 days left:

Don’t forget to send to everyone in your inbox.

The message first appeared in November last year, and since then “30 days left” has appeared consistently. Do the maths.

Apart from the anonymity regarding the poll, there are no contacts on the page, and no details as to how and what the results of the pole will be used for. This points to a phishing scam of some sorts, where malware is unknowingly installed on one’s PC or phone. The administrators of the ‘blog’ have been contacted for more information, but had (suspiciously) not responded at the time of going to press.

The reason Carte Blanche is unofficially affiliated with this message is due to a show on e-tolling which was broadcasted on 13 October last year. On the show, Howard Dembovsky of Justice Project SA said:

“If one million of those people say, ‘I am not getting your e-tag and I am not paying your e-toll’ you are going to have to serve one million criminal summonses per month. You are also going to have to put them on the court roll; you are also going to have to hear those cases. Therefore, our criminal justice system will collapse.”

Carte Blanche has responded to the email and has stated categorically that they are in no way responsible for or affiliated with the spetition.

If our Northside readers would like to make a difference regarding e-tolls and take a stance against this draconian law which seeks to incriminate highway users who do not comply, take part in the protest this Saturday.

The E-toll Public Protest will meet at the Portuguese Hall on the corner of Wemmer Pan and Victoria roads in the South of Johannesburg at 7.30am on 25 January. From there protesters will convoy en masse on the highway travelling northbound to the Camarro offramp. Protest organisers claim that this protest is 100 percent legal with SAPS and JMPD backing.
