Beyers beggars become belligerent

Residents want beggars to move out of the area.

Unruly beggars on Beyers Naudé Drive are causing Honeydew resident Swazi Coetzee and others to fear for their safety.

Coetzee said the beggars lived next to their complex. “We have an open veld next to our complex that belongs partly to the South African National Roads Agency and the City of Johannesburg,” said Coetzee. “This open veld can be seen when you drive from Cresta along Beyers

Naudé Drive towards Honeydew over the N1 highway, between the BP Oasis and Jim Fouché Road on your left.”

Coetzee added that there were 10 beggars who have moved to this open veld.

“I have contacted the Honeydew police, the Honeydew Community Policing Forum, the Joburg Roads Agency and Sanral without any response.”

In response to the complaint Metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said, “The beggars are regularly removed and taken to a location provided by the city council. There, they are given food and a place to sleep. Beggars often return to the streets because at the shelters provided for them, they do not get any money. The biggest issue is that they need money.”

No response from the Honeydew police or the Honeydew policing forum was received at the time of going to print.
