New resident’s association

Meeting held to promote community involvement and curb crime in the area.

The Sharonlea and Olivedale communities met on 7 November to establish a new resident’s association.

Residents met with Sector 1 Community Policing Forum chairperson Margaret van Zwieten, and Constable Mvuleni Mnisi and Colonel Tinus Swart from the Douglasdale Police Station.

Van Zwieten stated, “There has been a spike in crime in the area and we hope by establishing a residents’ association the community will become more involved, get to know each other and in turn help curb crime.”

Swart advised residents to be more aware of happenings in the area and to communicate with the police sector vehicle and contact crimeline. He also encouraged them to establish a neighbourhood watch.

Swart suggested residents consider installing security cameras in the area, which will assist greatly in the identification and apprehension of criminals. Mnisi advised residents who have domestic workers to educate them on protecting themselves and to improve their home security.

Sector 1’s communications manager Danielle Dooley volunteered to handle communication with residents in future via whatsapp, and said she would help with finalising the name of the new residents’ association.
