Fools love their books

Olivedale's FOOL's association is a team of book lovers that come together to raise funds for their library.

Friends Of Olivedale Library (Fool) is a book lover’s association that was established in 2003.

Olivedale Library senior librarian Jenny Norval said, “Fool raises funds for new books which has made quite a difference to our book stock over the years. We have a great committee run by Jackie Young, our dynamic chairperson. We are very grateful to work with the members of the association. They have done a great job in helping our library succeed”.

Young indicated that although people perceive the association as having only elderly members, there is a wide range of age groups, which total 140 members out of the 3 000 library members.

“Our job is to sort books, find new books and organise book sales to raise funds for the library,” Young said.

Committee member Barbara Veitch explained that their biggest challenge is to get people to join. The association also has speakers at their monthly meetings as well as a newsletter.

She explained, “The newsletter includes information about the association, shares people’s motivational and inspiring stories and encourages people to become involved.”

Fool works closely with the City of Johannesburg and book sellers.

Young added, “The public is welcome to donate any old or new books and even computers to the library.”
