Local chess players excel in Africa Youth Championship’

Five talented chess players from South Africa's Dr. Kenneth Kaunda Chess community made their mark at the 2024 Africa Youth Chess Championship, competing fiercely against top talents from across the continent.

The 2024 Africa Youth Chess Championship witnessed remarkable performances by five talented chess players from the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda Chess community in South Africa. Held at the Kopanong Hotel and Conference Centre in Ekurhuleni from 15 to 23 June this prestigious event drew young chess enthusiasts from across the continent.

Representing South Africa with skill and determination, Kari Goede, Atlegang Monchosi, Ettienne van Meersbergen, Philip Gouws, and Phillip Labuschagne demonstrated strategic brilliance on an international stage. Competing against strong opponents from countries like Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, and Egypt, these players exemplified sportsmanship and excellence throughout the championship.

The journey was marked by intense competition and moments of triumph as each player navigated challenges from their counterparts. Their performances not only showcased technical prowess but also their commitment to the game and country.
