Dragons T20 captain has his eyes on the prize

“It’s simple, the main goal this season is win and bring a trophy back to Potch. We want to play to win and play an exciting brand of cricket.”

Senuran Muthusamy, the newly appointed T20 captain for the North West Dragons, has achieved a long list of accolades in his decade long career in the SA cricketing landscape.

National domestic titles, Player of the Season awards, SA20 selection, Proteas test cap – all have check marks in the boxes.

One thing though that he has not yet been able to do is lift trophies in the maroon colours of the North West Dragons.

Senuran Muthusamy is one of the top players at the NW Dragons and will play a vital role in all three formats.

“It’s simple, the main goal this season is to win and bring a trophy back to Potch. We want to play to win and play an exciting brand of cricket,” states Muthusamy confidently.

Heading into his third season as a North West Dragon, the 29-year-old is undoubtedly one of the key senior players in the setup.  His move from the Dolphins has been a major plus for the Dragons in the past two seasons, where he has performed with both bat and ball, taking the NW Dragons Player of the Season award in 2021/22.

His calm nature, versatile skills in spin bowling and middle-order batting departments as well as his commitment to the cause, makes him an invaluable member of this North West Dragons team.

“This season it will be important to execute our skills and find a winning identity in all three formats. “We have quite a new and exciting squad. Pre-season has also been good. I’m looking forward to help create and play in an environment where everyone can express their abilities.”

“Consistent performances will also be important, especially at home,” adds Muthusamy, who is enjoying his cricket in Potch.

“The facilities are really fantastic. North West has some truly untapped potential. The cricketers at university have a fantastic opportunity to play at the highest level (for the Dragons) and this creates an exciting pipeline.”

His inclusion in the SA20 tournament last season also helped his game and approach to T20 cricket – something that he would want to carry over as T20 captain.

“Playing with the Pretoria Capitals was a fantastic experience. Having World Cup winners like Adil Rashid (England) in the squad was amazing. The execution of skills and the experiences they shared was invaluable,” said Muthusamy.

Muthusamy is a match winner who does not mind putting his hand up and taking opportunities that come his way.

“It’s simply, our goal is to win.”

This was evidenced in the SA A tour to Sri Lanka in June where he picked up career best match figures of 12/175.

“That tour was a great experience. The aim is to continue playing test cricket for the Proteas, but I also want to break into the white ball formats at international level. That is the goal,” enthuses Muthusamy.

“Sen” as Muthusamy is known amongst the cricketing fraternity, is ready to make this season his best yet.

The motivation is there, the fire is burning, now it’s just time to get the pot cooking with a winning recipe and that taste of victory.
