Die Wilge’s u.17 rugby team reaching big heights

The u.17 boys will compete in the final of the Gauteng High Schools league on 22 July 2023 after beating Die Adelaar High School (Roodepoort) 22-5 in the semi-final on Tuesday, 20 June.

Die Wilge High School’s u.17 rugby team has once again shown its class with impressive performances in the Gauteng High Schools’ League.

The u.17 boys will compete in the final of the Gauteng High Schools league on 22 July 2023 after beating Die Adelaar High School (Roodepoort) 22-5 in the semi-final on Tuesday, 20 June.

The result in the final will determine who Die Wilge faces next in the North Vaal Rugby
Championships.

“We are a small school with a rich rugby culture. We do not play leagues matches against other LSEN schools.

“We only compete against, ‘normal’ high schools, with three to four times the number of learners we have,” stated Die Wilge sport co-ordinator, Wikus Geyer.

Die Wilge competed against the following schools in the Gauteng High Schools league: Westonaria High School

– Wonderfontein High School (Carletonville)

– Die Adelaar High School (Roodepoort)

– Roodepoort High School

– Carleton Jones High School (Carletonville)

– Afrikaans Hoërskool Germiston

– High School Vorentoe (Rossmere)

“The boys played brilliant attacking rugby with great support play. It was a very physical match, with big hits and big tackles; but our boys endured, and won the match, 22-5,” stated Geyer on their semi-final win after ending the season second in their pool.

The u.15 team played exceptional rugby, considering it was the first time 80 per cent of the learners had playing the sport. They ended up fourth (4th) in the league.

“We are very proud of every learner and coach for reaching this first milestone and wish them luck with the next endeavour,” stated Geyer.
