NWU athletes shine at ACNW league meeting

Tamzin Thomas (NWU) shone in the women 25 100m event winning in a time of 11.69 seconds ahead of Liné Kloster of Norway, who finished in 11.72 seconds.

The ACNW/NWU HPI Track and Field meeting on Tuesday, 28 February at the NWU McArthur-stadium was another clear indication of the local and international talent in Potchefstroom.

Young and experienced athletes took the track and field and performed valiantly in the summer sunshine.

Tamzin Thomas (NWU) shone in the women 25 100m event winning in a time of 11.69 seconds ahead of Liné Kloster of Norway, who finished in 11.72 seconds.

Kloster went one better and won the women’s 200m race in 23.27 seconds ahead of Rogail Joseph (NWU) in second and Rose Xeyi (NWU) in third.

Lucky Moleyane won the men’s 100m event in 10.55 seconds, ahead of Stefan van der Merwe (NWU) in 11.09 seconds. He also won the 200m event in 20.81 seconds ahead of Benjamin Richardson (NWU) and Mihlali Xolyeni (NWU). Richardson crossed the line in 21.13 and Xolyeni in 21.54.

Youssouf Abdel of Qatar won the men’s (20) 400m race in 48.87 seconds. Lente Pieterse (NWU) showed her experience winning in 55.09 seconds in the women’s 400m race.  Christopher Swart (NWU) also took first in the men’s 400m race in a time of 49.58 seconds.

Lesego Chacha of President Pretorius Primary also shone in the boys 200m winning in 27.15 seconds.

Imke Bornman of Laerskool Baillie Park also showed her potential with a throw of 11.29 in the girls shotput event.

Waldouw Smit (NWU) and Armand Willemse (NWU) also showed early season form in the men’s 25 and 20 javelin events. Smit beat compatriot Johann Grobler with a throw of 77.46 metres. Grobler managed 72.17 metres. Willemse threw 65.20 metres to beat Righardt Stander’s throw of 61.40 metres.

In the women’s javelin, Jo-Ané van Dyk showed why she is the current Africa champion with a throw of 54.84 metres to take first place.
