NWU sporting stars get their first taste of Commonwealth Games action

NWU's badminton stars, Deidré Jordaan and Jareed Elliot, made a great start to their Commonwealth Games adventure.

The NWU will have a total of 7 athletes and 2 coaches representing their country at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England from 28 July – 8 August.
This is a massive opportunity for these young athletes to showcase their talent in one of the premier sporting events in the world.
NWU’s badminton stars, Deidré Jordaan and Jareed Elliot, made a great start to their Commonwealth Games adventure for SA, when the beat Jamaica and Zambia to qualify for the quarter-finals in the mixed team badminton event.
Elmeré van der Berg (goal shooter) will represent South Africa on the netball court. SA did not have the best start to the tournament going down to Jamaica by 68-49. Van der Berg scored 13 goals for her side from the goal attack position in this match.
On the athletics front, Jo-Ané van Dyk (Javelin), Liezel Gouws (Para-athletics 100m), Alan Cumming (Hammer throw) and Namibia’s Ryan Williams (discus) will all look to come back to Potch with medals in their possession.
On the coaching front, Shaun Bownes (Sprints & relay – athletics) and Nelson Komane-Nel (hockey) will also fly the SA flag high in Birmingham.
