Mooirivier and Gimnasium athletes shine at NWU/ACNW meeting

Laerskool Mooirivier’s speed merchant, Righardt Joubert won the boys u.13 100m race in a splendid time of 12.32 seconds. Joubert also took gold in the boys u.13 80m hurdles in 11.44 seconds.

An action-packed weekend of athletics action took place at the NWU McArthur stadium from 19-20 March as athletes showcased their talents at the NWU/ACNW combined Athletics Meeting.

Several local school athletes achieved some top results against their national compatriots in this competitive meeting. Laerskool Mooirivier’s speed merchant, Righardt Joubert won the boys u.13 100m race in a splendid time of 12.32 seconds. Joubert also took gold in the boys u.13 80m hurdles in 11.44 seconds.

Lizé van Zyl (Mooirivier) also shined in the girls u.13 category taking two seconds places in the 100m and long jump. She jumped 4.92 metres and went across the line in the 100 metres in 13.09 seconds. Emma Joubert of Potchefstroom Gimnasium took a first place in girls 400m hurdles in a time of 1:01.20.

Karmen Fouché was also on the top of her game as the Gimmies star took a first place in the women’s 20 high jump event with a leap of 1.75 metres. She also took first in the women 20 long jump with an impressive distance of 6.04 metres.

Danielle Verster of Gimmies took a third place in the women’s 20 category against some top competition, once again underlining her immense talent finishing the 800m in 2:13.57. Michael van Rooyen, head boy of Potchefstroom Gimnasium also took a third place in the men’s 20 high jump with a leap of 1.70 metrers.

Jamoré Olivier was also on top form in the girls u.14 shotput with a throw of 14.02 metres. She also took second in the discus with a throw of 33.23 metres. Armand Willemse (Gimmies) was also too good for his compatriots in the boys u.18 javelin event as he launched the javelin to 68.34 metres. Although it was below his best, he still managed to easily take first place.
