NW Premier League produces low-scoring thrillers

NWU Colts snatched a nailbiting 1-wicket victory against NWU Taurus at the Ibbies Oval.

The Wohnen Top Paints North West Club Cricket Premier League made a welcome return at various cricket grounds last weekend, after a long hiatus due to Covid-19. The league is now back in full swing, but under Covid-19 level 1 regulations, with no spectators allowed at the matches.

The defending champions, NWU-Pukke, won their first match against NWU Ibbies by 31 runs via the Duckworth/Lewis method. Chris Brits was the top scorer for NWU with 40 (55), with Ibbies’ Connor de Boer taking 2/27 and Henro Janse van Rensburg a solid 2/28 with his off-spin. Ibbies’ top scorer with the willow was Janse van Rensburg with 37 (43), while Pukke’s Brits (2/30) and Katle Leokaoke (2/21) took the most wickets between them. Potch Dorp 1 (199/8) also completed an easy 91-run win against Travelling Reefs (108 all out).

The top achievers for Dorp were Chad Claasen (3/11) and Nic Smit, with 40 (68). Potch Dorp 2 achieved a tight 19-run win against Ramblers Cricket Club. Dorp 2 struggled to 116 all out before their bowlers saved the day to dismiss Ramblers for only 97.

The stars for Dorp 2 were Alex Meyer (5/22) and Pieter Widd (3/8) NWU Colts snatched a nailbiting 1-wicket victory against NWU Taurus at the Ibbies Oval. Taurus managed 131 all out before Colts crawled over the victory line in dramatic fashion.

Stephan Maree 43* (78) steered Colts to a marginal win. Maree also contributed with the ball taking 3/11. Vernon Charslund (Taurus) also put in a fine all-round performance, taking 2/32 and hitting 39 (42) with the willow.
