SA u.19 colours for talented Gimmies spinner

Seleka picked up a total of nine wickets in the tournament and was one of the most consistent spinners for its duration. His wickets came at an economy rate of 2.85

One of the top young prospects in North West Cricket’s youth system, Caleb Seleka, has been rewarded for his hard work and persistence with selection to the SA u.19 team. Seleka, a learner at Potchefstroom Gimnasium, impressed all and sundry during the recent Cricket South Africa (CSA) National Franchise Cubs Week in Stellenbosch from 3 to 7 February.

Seleka is now also the second Gimmie cricketer, after Marco Jansen (2019), to represent the SA u.19 team. Phemelo Sepati (THS Potchefstroom) was the other Potchefstroom representative for the young Lions Cubs team and also held his name high against SA’s top young talent.

Seleka picked up a total of nine wickets in the tournament and was one of the most consistent spinners for its duration. His wickets came at an economy rate of 2.85 in 28.4 overs. He only conceded 85 runs and bowled a total of 108 dot balls.

“I feel really privileged to have made the team. I have put in all the hard work and dedication and it has paid off. The Cubs week was a great learning experience. It was challenging to play against some of the best players in the country, but it was exciting as well,” exclaimed Seleka.

The Lions Cubs could not repeat their good showing of previous years, though, and had to settle for fourth place. Seleka’s coach at a provincial level, Claude April, and Wian Lubbe at a school level can be proud of this young man’s rise in the game; he can now wear an SA u.19 green baggy with pride.
