Former NWU star Rhyno Smith relishes new move to Italy

“My goals ahead of the two-year deal is to contribute as much as possible. With every interaction I want to make a good impression on people, to be a good human being and spread the gospel,”

The versatility, talent, and skills of the former NWU Varsity Cup winner, Rhyno Smith, will now be showcased in Italy at Benetton Treviso. Smith, who spent the last few seasons of his career at the Leopards, Sharks and Cheetahs, will now play for an overseas club for the first time.

Smith signed a new two year deal until 30 June 2023 with an option to extend. Benetton Treviso play their rugby in the Pro 14 and are one of the most successful Italian clubs in the north of Italy.

Smith previously attracted attention in the Pro 14 during his stint with the Cheetahs and his exploits caught the attention of Benetton Treviso. This new move gives Smith the chance to take part in the biggest club competition in the Northern Hemisphere, which is an exciting challenge.

“My goals ahead of the two-year deal is to contribute as much as possible. With every interaction I want to make a good impression on people, to be a good human being and spread the gospel,” said Smith.

He also feels that he can achieve a couple of things on his rugby checklist at his new club. “I’ve never played 50 games for one team, so it will be great to tick that box at my new club. The chance to play abroad is a fantastic opportunity to learn a new culture and language. It is something that my wife and I are looking forward to. We welcome the new challenge and hope to take it head on,” mentioned the utility back.

Smith, who has also played for the Blitzboks, has represented various teams since wearing the blue and white hoops of Paarl Boys High and now he is set to make an impact in the green and white of Benetton Treviso.

“I feel satisfied with what I’ve done and contributed, even though I still feel that I can tick some boxes in SA rugby. If I get the opportunity to come back, then I will relish that opportunity. I enjoyed the journey playing for three different provinces. The move is not something new to us, but the extent of the move is new. Exciting times lay ahead,” said Smith to Potchefstroom Herald.

Smith also thanked his alma mater, NWU and rugby clubs that he was part of for the past few years in a post on Instagram announcing his new stint in Italy.

“No matter the color or badge that I have represented or will represent in future I hope to make some kind of impression on the people I meet. I hope I do my part to introduce the all omnipotent, omnipresent and all-knowing God to those who may not know Him. And I hope to leave a legacy. That a boy from Newton had dreams and pursued them,” Smith added on his personal Instagram account.
