From the Archive: Dragons beat Gauteng and WP in same week back in 1998

Arno Jacobs with a fantastic 85 and Thinus Enslin with a well-crafted 52 were two of the start for North West against Gauteng under the coaching guidance of Gordon Parsons.

Rewind the clock back to 1998 and you would find an upbeat Dragons team beating not only Western Province but also Gauteng in consecutive weeks.

In those days it was quite a feat against the talented Gauteng and Western Province teams who had a number of SA players in their squads.

The North West squad of those years, included, former Warriors batsman, Arno Jacobs, Hendrik de Vos, David Pryke, Mark Lavine and Morné Strydom, among others.

In the first match of the campaign North West swept Western Province by 103 runs, before stunning Gauteng by 4 wickets at the Wanderers.

Jacobs with a fantastic 85 and Thinus Enslin with a well-crafted 52 were two of the start for North West against Gauteng under the coaching guidance of Gordon Parsons.

Strydom hit a calculated 93 against Western Province and took four wickets (including that of Protea, Brian McMillan, to steer his side to victory.

Strydom would spend a couple more seasons at North West and would eventually play his final first class match in the 2002/03 season against Western Province.

It was quite a topsy-turvy season as Griqualand-West won the Standard Bank One Day title for the first and only time in their history. Players such as Deon Kruis, Loots Bosman and Pat Symcox among others, formed quite a sturdy team back in the day.
