One on One: Michael de Beer

De Beer is an adventurous, outdoorsy and compassionate individual who is also a God-fearing man. He loves his wife and everyone else, especially his learners and sports players.

Michael Andries de Beer (27), known by most as “Mig”, is a Geography teacher and coach for the rugby and cricket teams at Hoër Volkskool, Potchefstroom.

De Beer is an adventurous, outdoorsy and compassionate individual who is also a God-fearing man. He loves his wife and everyone else, especially his learners and sports players.

He was born in Potchefstroom, moved to Klerksdorp and then came back to Potchefstroom, where he completed his matric at Potchefstroom Gimnasium.

De Beer has had a passion for rugby and cricket since he was a young boy. He, therefore, combined his love of sports and compassion for children and became a coach in both rugby and cricket.

Both his teams (rugby u.16) and (cricket first team) have experienced losses and wins. However, with the support of Markus de Beer (his father), Jaco Marais (rugby assistant coach) and Wynand Schmitt (head coach of cricket), Mighael also uses the sports fields as a platform to teach the players a few life lessons, too. There are many pressures and challenges, wins and losses but, what matters the most, is the effort, dedication, impact and commitment each one has put in through his journey.

De Beer is also a hunter and fisherman. He hunts for fun and is an angler by profession. Mig is a member of Mooirivier Angling Club and represented the South Africa Freshwater Bank Angling Federation (SAFBAF) in the Region Five championship in Hardap Region, Namibia. Here, he won an award which, he says, was the highlight of his angling career.

Despite all his achievements, De Beer is still committed and dedicated to keep growing and developing in his various sporting interests. This also applies to his teaching career, and making an impact on his learners’ lives.
