The School of Artillery reclaimed the title of ‘Best Sporting Unit’ in the North West from 4 Artillery Regiment, winning the day by a mere one point.
Things heated up at the Potchefstroom Military Sports Club (PMSC) sports grounds on Wednesday, 10 October 2018 when 15 SANDF units in the NW Province came together to participate in ten sporting codes.

In addition to commemorating victories, sports competitions also aim to impart lessons on sportsmanship and camaraderie to soldiers, incorporating the ‘challenge’ aspect of soldiership.

The very important aspect of sports providing the ability to make people feel they are part of something was once again clearly visible on the day.
The fantastic turnout from the 15 participating units and the pleasant, warm weather were the perfect boost for the soldiers participating in this bi-annual summer sports day.

Maj. Pierre Hamman, the acting chairperson of the PMSC officially opened the day’s activities on behalf of Colonel M.J. Moralo – the chairperson of the NW PTSR C.
This event for soldiers once again provided the platform to bring people together in a relaxed environment. It was aimed at building lasting networks and friendships across the organisation in the future.

Once the ten sports events began, the air was filled with cheering and loads of encouragement for the participants. As has become custom over the years, the soccer and volleyball competitions were once again vigorously contested.

The units participated in netball, freshwater angling, golf, road running, bowls, walking, cue sport, soccer, squash and volleyball.
There was laughter, there were tears and there was a lot of running but, in the end, this day will be remembered as a day of tense competition, exemplary sporting endeavours and very hot weather.
After a lot of blood, sweat and tears, the day was concluded with the School of Artillery trumping 4 Artillery Regiment in second place with a single point.
The Army Support Base Potchefstroom finished third, only three points adrift from the School of Artillery.
