The Proteas women’s team steam-rolled their way past the Bangladesh women’s cricket team this past weekend with two impressive ODI victories at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom.
The women in green and gold won the first ODI on Friday, 4 May by 106 runs and the second ODI on Sunday 6 May with a comprehensive 9-wicket win.
The pleasing aspect of these victories was the manner in which both the batting and bowling departments fired on all cylinders as they gave the Bangladesh Tigers no sniff of victory.
In the first ODI, the Proteas batted first and compiled 270/9 in their 50 overs. The hometown heroine, Lizelle Lee hit a fine 54 (64) and Chloe Tryon smashed 65 (42), which included three towering sixes.
The Bangladeshis could only muster 164 all out as the captain, Dané van Niekerk’s leg spin bowling did the most damage. Van Niekerk picked up figures of 3/23 and got good support from Tryon (2/14).
The only Bangladesh batter who could do anything of note was Fargana Hoque who hit an extremely patient 69* (124).
The second ODI on Sunday was a bigger one-sided affair as SA’s bowlers pounced on a hapless Tigers team that was dismissed for a paltry 89. SA’s opening batters, Lee (32 off 37) and Laura Wolvaardt (37 off 50) chased the target down with consummate ease with only Lee losing her wicket.
