‘The race is not over until the bell rings.’

Those were the words of little known Thabang Mosiako who went on to claim victory at the SA senior track and field championships in the men’s 5000 m final at Puk McArthur stadium.

The 22-year-old chased Elroy Gelant down, making up 200 m to snatch victory at the finish line. Mosiako also outclassed the experienced Stephen Mokoka. His victory came as a surprise to onlookers as Gelant and Mokoka were expected to battle it out as the       favourites, having both competed in the Olympics. Prior to the race, not a lot was known about Mosiako and that may have   played a positive role in his unexpected success at the championships. ‘I wanted to prove myself among the elite. Not that I am undermining my competitors but I wanted my name to be listed with the best. ’The victory was made even sweeter because of the home support,’ said Mosiako.

After an amazing performance at the SA senior championships, Mosiako will now focus his attention on improving his performance in the various 10- and 21-kilometre races. ‘I usually compete in these races and I want to   improve on my finishing times,’ he said.
