A perfect combination of attack and defence paved the way for an easy 58-36 victory for Pukke against an always dangerous Kovsies side tonight at the Imbizo Hall in Soweto.
NWU Pukke made a scintillating start in this Varsity Netball match as Kovsies had no answer for the attacking formation of Mandy Hermanus, Renske Stoltz and Sigi Burger. The combination of Burger and Stoltz had Pukke leading by more than 10 points throughout the first quarter.
Kovsies though made a better start to the second quarter with Rieze Straueli and Tanya Mostert linking up well. Alicia Puren also upped her defensive game as Burger was not given the space and easy shots.
Pukke’s Romé Dreyer was also a live wire in the center of the court as her swift movement and intelligent interplay with Stoltz set up numerous attacking opportunities for Pukke.
At half-time Pukke was leading by 29-13 with Kovsies needing to pull a rabbit out of the hat to get the better of the champions.
Zandré Kruger, Jeanté Strydom and Chanté Bester was also brilliant on defence and worked well together to keep Kovsies out of the game.
Pukke took the first Powerplay in the third quarter, and used it to lengthen their advantage to 43-23 with three minutes to go in the second quarter. It also did not help Kovsies that they struggled to find their passes on the attacking front.
In the end it was a convincing win for Pukke who are now a three game winning streak.
“I’m very happy with the team’s performance. This was a team effort and we keep motivating each other,” said Romé Dreyer, the player of the match.
