Young boys from Ikageng will experience the most memorable moments of their young lives when they compete against teams like Manchester City, Liverpool and other international teams in Manchester, England, later this month.

The thirty u.10 soccer boys are part of the Jomo Cosmos Academy that has been invited to take part in a prestigious international tournament on 26 July.

The skillful young lads will  showcase their talent and impress foreign scouts who will be watching. According to the technical coach, Kagiso Molefe, they are hoping that four of their players are selected and invited for trials in one of the best   teams in England. “Our team is ready and, when they come back from this overseas tour, they will start playing in the North-Eastern league in Gauteng next year,” he said.

Despite this turning point in these players’ lives, Kagiso says funding is the main challenge and would like Potchefstroomers to lend a helping hand. “The team is appealing to sponsors to come on board because most of the children are disadvantaged and some have single parents. Any donations are welcome to make the trip possible for other children whose parents are not well off. It can be T-shirts, soccer equipment and any other form of     assistance.

Some parents and the municipality have already contributed to the trip. However the funds are not enough at this point,” he pleaded. Oupa Mothibedi, director of the team says the members, who are learners from primary schools all over Potchefstroom, is ready and has been practising for two months.

“Only two teams from South Africa were invited. We will be representing Potchefstroom, Cosmos, and South Africa,” he said proudly. Mothibedi appeals to the parents and schools to keep on supporting the children, even when they come back from the tour.

Prospective sponsors or donors can contact Kagiso Molefe at 076 907 3899.
