The NWU Pukke could easily have taken this year’s Varsity 7’s title if it had been decided on form alone in the group stages of the tournament that was held at the Villagers Rugby Club in Cape Town from 30 April to 2 May.
The Pukke were on top of the standings before the knockout rounds and playing some scintillating rugby in the ten universities rugby spectacle. The Pukke were stopped in their tracks in the semi-final, though, when they went down to the inspired University of Western Cape side by 14-12.
In the end, Maties won the title, avenging their 15-man defeat to Pukke with a 19-5 win in the final. The Pukke had to settle for a well played third place with a clinical 17-0 demolition of Tuks in the Bronze Final.
The Pukke outclassed their rivals from Pretoria in the second half after scoring a late try before half time through Ian Heyns. Eugene Hare and Heyns were running the show for the Pukke as Heyns quickly got his second try to extend the lead to 12 points. Pukke’s pace machine, Timothy Prince made it 17-0 to bury Tuks’ chances of making any comeback.
